The Amutenyi village, Obollo-Afor, in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, has been thrown into mourning following the death of five family members in the community.
The incident, which happened on Saturday, involved a woman, her two children and two sisters, who visited her.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, identified the victims as Mrs Chinyere Odoh; her two children, Udochukwu Odoh, seven; and Chukwuemeka Odoh, four, as well as her two sisters: Martina Ezeme and Ngozi Ezeme.
He said the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, had ordered the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence and Department to conduct a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Ndukwe noted that preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased persons went to bed the previous night and were not seen in the morning.
“Their lifeless bodies were found in two separate rooms they slept in when police operatives from the Udenu Police Division of the command, who swiftly responded to a distress call to the incident, forced open the doors of the rooms.
“They were immediately moved to a hospital and confirmed dead by doctors on duty, and their corpses deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” he added.
