Akasan community in Taura Local Government has recorded over fifty cases of cholera outbreak in Jigawa State.

District Head of the community, Malam Arma Ya’u Muhammad confirmed this while speaking to newsmen after leading the environmental sanitation campaign to curve the outbreak organized by the SCI, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Ministry of Health.

According to him, “we recorded over fifty cases of cholera outbreak in the last two months, no loss of lives, and most of the victims of the cholera outbreak are children.”

Akasan community leader, Muhammad Dankawu said the community embarked on environmental sanitation to ensure the outbreak is controlled to prevent deaths.

“Most of these outbreaks is a result of poor environmental hygiene and lack of awareness on personal hygiene,” he said.

Dankawu said the environmental sanitation campaign will help in reducing the risk of the cholera outbreak and other child killer diseases in the community.

He noted that the Jigawa State Government, in collaboration with Save the Children, has supported the community to ensure the outbreak is controlled, provide access to treatment of infected persons and strengthen the capacity of community structures for prevention, early preparedness, and mitigation of future outbreaks.
