A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State, Princess Ada Ogbu has again lamented the challenges women are facing in Nigeria.
Ogbu, who is the APC Senatorial Candidate for Enugu East Senatorial zone, said women have what it takes to offer quality leadership.
Ogbu stated that almost 23 years since the return of the country to democratic rule, Nigerian women were still facing rejection by their male counterparts in all ramifications.
The APC senatorial candidate was speaking when she played host to the Director-General, Women Support Women, Mrs. Onyii Mamah, in Enugu on Tuesday.
She said all stakeholders have roles to play to bolster and improve women’s leadership opportunities and influence, including for adolescent girls and young women to develop the leaders of the future.
According to her, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the countries governed by women did so well, adding that value of women’s leadership can be seen in characteristics associated with their leadership style, including cooperation, collaboration, and inclusivity.
“When I went to the August meeting, I visited a lot of places and I told them one thing, it’s not about Ada Ogbu. I am just the second woman that got a ticket in a major party. Women are more thorough, they run campaigns different from men and that makes it interesting.
“I am very happy with this initiative. We need this message out there that women can do better. It’s evident that when women go there they can do better, we have more empathy than men. We have that fear.
“A lot of people have said they have tried men, let them try women, they have fear and they can do better. We are getting somewhere as women and we just have to do a lot better, it’s for our sisters, our nieces, and daughters,” she said.
Ogbu, who congratulated women on International Day of the Girl Child, insisting that the society must pay attention to the training of the girl child.
Responding, the Director-General, Women Support Women, Mrs. Onyii Mamah, congratulated Princess Ada Ogbu, for her courage and determination to venture into a terrain mostly populated by men.
According to Mamah, “Women support Women (WSW) is non-partisan and our message is purely candidate over party.”
Mamah, founder, Heroine Women Foundation, said “this is the time for the stage to be mounted by women”, adding that it would be to the advantage of women seeing their kind occupying the space.
“Women have begun to take the stage. There is no woman that can’t perform because women understand pain. There is so much we can achieve if we synergize,” she noted.
