About 1.8 million children in Borno State are out of school, the state government has revealed.

The state government, however, described the situation as worrisome.

Abba Wakibe, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, at the opening ceremony for the training of At Risk Children-Programme (ARC-P) of 968 Youth Facilitators’ in Borno State held in Maiduguri on Monday, made the revelation.

He attributed the number of out-of-school children in the state to the effect of insurgency on the educational sector in the state, adding that the enrollment of children and manpower also contributed.

The Commissioner explained, “We have 56,000 orphans and 49,000 widows, but the number of fatherless children still remains unknown. It is our sincere hope that this programme will reduce the number of out-of-school children in Borno State.”
