The late Inspector Monday Orukpe of the Lagos State Police Command died of assault, multiple injuries and blunt force trauma after an attack by soldiers, autopsies show.
The autopsies were conducted by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and the Nigerian Army Cantonment Medical Centre, Ojo.
The widow, Mrs Favour Orukpe, gave copies of the reports to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
On August 3, some soldiers from Ojo Cantonment clashed with policemen controlling traffic in the area.
The officers, while guarding the CCECC gate along the Lagos-Badagry expressway, stopped vehicles to make way for a construction truck.
A confrontation ensued after dozens of infuriated Military Ordinance School personnel complained of a long delay.
The autopsy by LASUTH was signed on October 27, 2022, by Dr O. O. Onayemi of the Department of Pathology and Forensics.
The report revealed that multiple injuries and blunt force trauma caused Orukpe’s death.
The autopsy by the Nigerian Army was signed by Dr I. Agueze. It found that the primary cause was assault, and the secondary head injury.
Orukpe’s wife said her husband was yet to be buried because of the delay in the release of the autopsy reports and that the family was waiting to know the culprits.
Acting Deputy Director in charge of Public Relations at 81 Division, Maj. Olaniyi Osoba confirmed that the Army and Police joint committee was still investigating the case.
