A Coalition of National Civil Society Organisations, CNCSOs has disclosed that the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele had earlier rejected waivers for election spending which was sought by some politicians.
The group said Emefiele ran into trouble for rejecting the request to grant waivers for election spending and insisted on cash withdrawal policy, a development they claimed led to the political elements resorting to getting him out of the way.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, the National Convener of the group, Chief Willy Ezugwu and the Secretary, Alhaji Ali Abacha said the grand plot was to arrest and detain the apex bank governor for 60 days when election might have been held before releasing him.
The noted group noted that the Central Bank Governor escaped the phoney charges by the whiskers because they took the matter to an incorruptible judge unknowingly.
They said: “We have all hailed the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria such that even the corrupt politicians who are opposing the cash withdrawal limits acknowledge that it is the way to go, but that the timing was wrong.
“They also sought to get waivers for election spending. Why are they looking for waivers? They want to use our stolen commonwealth to buy our votes.”
They urged President Muhammadu Buhari to wade into the matter, given its sensitivity to the nation.
