The Imo State House of Assembly candidate of the Labour Party for Owerri municipal constituency seat, Clinton Amadi has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force.
SaharaReporters gathered that Amadi was whisked away on Tuesday afternoon from the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri, the state capital.
Amadi was arrested by the operatives of the Imo State Police Command during his visit to the INEC office to obtain the Certified True Copy of the INEC results for the March 18 State Assembly election to prosecute his case at the elections petition tribunal.
The LP candidate, who spoke to some journalists in Owerri, accused officials of the electoral umpire of conspiring with police personnel from the Tiger Base Unit of the state command to arrest him as part of an alleged ongoing political attack by the All Progressives Congress government in the state against opposition parties.
Amadi said, “I was called to come to INEC Office to collect the certified copy of the INEC results, reaching there in the afternoon I got surrounded by heavily armed policemen who arrested me.
“Currently, I am at the Tiger Base Unit of Imo State Police Command, I just sneaked out to answer your call.”
Meanwhile, the Labour Party has yet to release an official statement about the arrest of their state assembly candidate.
However, one of the leading aspirants for the state governorship race, Maj. Gen. Jack Ogunewe (Rtd) has reacted to the arrest of Amadi.
He described Amadi’s arrest by the police as a total violation of his rights.
