Commissioner of Police Faleye Olayele confirmed the attack in a statement signed and made available to newsmen in Abakaliki by Ebonyi State Police Command’s spokesperson, Onome Onovwakpoyeya.

According to the statement: “Operatives of the command on stop and search duty at Oshiri Division were attacked by armed hoodlums. Sadly, three policemen lost their lives; one was injured and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

“Tactical teams were immediately drafted to the area to go after the hoodlums. Consequently, two of the hoodlums were neutralised, and others escaped with bullet wounds.”

According to the police authorities, items recovered from the hoodlums include a Lexus ES-350 model, a fabricated AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine with seven rounds of ammunition, an SMG rifle and magazine with rounds of ammunition, a pack of hard drugs (SK), charms, juju drums, and chakra musical instruments for shrines.

Buhari directs all Ministers to keep working until May 29

President Muhammadu Buhari has tasked all ministers in his cabinet to continue until May 29, when president-elect Bola Tinubu will be inaugurated as his successor.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday.

Mohammed also noted that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) hasn’t been dissolved.

Speaking with state house correspondents, he said: “I just want to make this clarification. While we were at the chambers there was a false breaking news that the federal executive council has been dissolved, which is not correct,” Lai said.

“As a matter of fact, we have been directed by the president that we should all go back and return to our offices. So it is not true that the federal executive council has been dissolved, it is still very much alive.

I’ve prepared handover notes to guide you – Aisha Buhari tells Mrs Tinubu

The outgoing First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has officially engaged the wife of the President-elect, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, acquainting her with duties of the Office of First Lady of Nigeria.

Mrs Buhari, who received her successor on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, also handed over some documents to Mrs Tinubu to serve as guide towards piloting the affairs of the office.

She also handed over the seal of the African First Ladies Peace Mission to the incoming first lady, being the chief host of all the spouses of the African heads of state.

Mrs Buhari expressed confidence in the ability of the incoming first lady to deliver on the task ahead.

NAN reports that the event signalled the formal transition of official engagements in the office of the first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“As you are all aware, the role of the First Lady is unconstitutional, but we enjoy the goodwill of the citizens in order to carry out some basic things, like humanitarian activities.

“We partner with a lot of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in order to help our citizens, and I have enjoyed that goodwill for the last eight years.

“So, I have prepared a handover, just to guide you, and see the NGOs that we have worked with,” Mrs Buhari said.

Responding, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu appreciated the outgoing first lady for exhibiting a high sense of leadership and dexterity in handling the affairs of her office.

“We are very humbled by what you have done, you have exhibited great leadership and dexterity in the way you do things.

“I want to sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart because you don’t come into this role and say you know it all.

“I know I served many years ago as the governor’s wife for eight years, but now things have changed and are being done differently. I have been in the legislative arm for 12 years now.

“We promise you that you will be proud of the work we will do,” she said.
