The Imo House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on Governor Hope Uzodimma to rehabilitate failed portions of the old Orlu -Owerri road.
This followed the adoption of a motion by Ikenna Ihezuo (APC-Orlu) at plenary on Tuesday.
Presenting the motion, Mr Ihezuo called for the repairs on the old Owerri Road starting from Y-Junction to Owerre-Umudoka, Ebeiri-Umuna, and Amaifeke-Nkwuito Junction in Orlu LGA.
He said the road had remained deplorable despite being reconstructed and several maintenance works carried out by the Imo Ministry of Works, Housing and Urban Development.
Mr Ihezuo expressed worry that the deplorable condition of the road would worsen with the advent of the rainy season, hindering the movement of the people in the affected communities.
He also added that residents’ lives and property were threatened by gully erosion caused by the rain.
The lawmaker said the road was a major link to important government establishments, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, Orlu, the Imo International Market, Orlu, and the State University Teaching Hospital, Oriu.
He said that, due to the deplorable state of the road, economic and commercial activities in the surrounding communities had crumbled.
He urged Mr Uzodimma to direct the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Urban Development to repair the damaged portions of the road.
The legislator also urged the House Standing Committee on Works to visit the area for an on-the-spot assessment.
James Esile (APC-Onuimo) supported the motion, saying that good roads contributed greatly to any society’s economic and infrastructure development.
He supported the prayer of the sponsor and called for immediate action on the road.
The speaker, Chike Olemgbe (APC-Ihitte Uboma), ruled in favour of the motion after unanimous votes adopted it.
