During a high school graduation ceremony at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico, a distressing incident occurred when a young man, identified as 21-year-old Christian Bencomo, shot his stepmother as she attempted to embrace him.

The woman, attending the Southwest Secondary Learning Center graduation for her son, was shot in the neck by Bencomo as she approached him for a hug.

The Albuquerque Police Department received reports of shots fired around 5 p.m., amidst the chaos of the ceremony attended by over 100 people. Fortunately, the victim was swiftly taken to a hospital and is expected to recover from her injuries.

Bencomo was apprehended by bystanders and detained until law enforcement arrived on the scene.He is currently held without bail at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center, facing charges including unlawful carrying of a weapon, aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm to a family member, and preventative detention.
