Tragedy struck late Sunday night when a speeding Mercedes Benz SUV, carrying two occupants, collided with a stationary truck, resulting in a fatal fire. The incident occurred at Mandilas Bus Stop, Iyana Isolo, off the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.
Eyewitness Mr. Abdulfatai Wasiu attributed the fatalities to the driver’s excessive speed, which led to the collision. The crash caused a severe fire, burning all three male occupants in the SUV to death.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), confirmed the incident. He reported that upon arrival at 11:38 pm, responders encountered a collision involving the SUV and a truck carrying a 40-foot container. Preliminary investigations revealed that the SUV collided with the truck due to overspeeding, causing a fire outbreak from the car’s engine.
By 9 am Monday, traffic in the area had returned to normal following the evacuation of the three burnt victims. Their remains were taken by officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) to the morgue. The truck and the charred SUV were towed to the LASTMA Yard.
Emergency responders at the scene included the Fire Unit, Lagos State Rescue and Fire Service, SEHMU, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigeria Police, and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
