A 45-year-old driver, Tasi’u Ashiru, tragically killed six people and injured seven others in an accident in Jigawa State. The incident occurred on Wednesday at Sabon Garin Takanebu, Miga LGA, along the Jahun to Gujungu Road, when Ashiru lost control of his Mitsubishi Canter, running into market-goers.
Eyewitnesses reported the incident to Newsmen, noting that many victims died on the scene, while others sustained varying injuries.
DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the police command spokesman, confirmed the accident. He detailed that the accident happened around 9 PM on June 12, 2024, involving a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number XA 519 KUR, driven by Ashiru from Kara village, Ajingi LGA, Kano State.
Upon losing control at the Sabon Gari market, Ashiru’s vehicle struck several people, resulting in ten injuries and three immediate deaths. A police team promptly arrived, transporting both the injured and the deceased to Jahun General Hospital. Unfortunately, three more victims died en route to the hospital, bringing the total fatalities to six. The injured are currently receiving treatment and are reported to be stable.
The bodies have been handed over to their families for burial. Meanwhile, the driver is in custody as the investigation continues.
Jigawa State Police Commissioner, CP AT Abdullahi, expressed condolences, praying for the deceased and urging motorists to drive carefully. He stressed that reckless drivers would face legal consequences.
