A 45-year-old woman named Abiodun, also known as Iya Sunday, has set her 86-year-old mother ablaze in Ondo town, Ondo State, allegedly based on advice from her pastor.

Abiodun claimed that her pastor had told her that her mother was responsible for her misfortunes.

The tragic incident occurred early on Friday morning when Abiodun visited her mother’s house.

According to eyewitnesses, she called her mother outside around 5 a.m., doused her in petrol, and set her on fire.

The elderly woman, who suffered severe burns, was taken to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Abiodun, now in police custody at the Enu-Owa division, explained that she was driven by a belief instilled by her pastor, who claimed her mother was the source of her problems.

She added that another woman, whom her mother had taken her to visit, also suggested the same thing.

The state police spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigation into the incident. The elderly woman passed away in the hospital a few days after being admitted.
