Zainab Isa, a 22-year-old nursing mother, has been arrested by the Yobe State Police Command for allegedly stabbing her husband, Ibrahim Yahaya, to death.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, made the announcement in a statement issued on Wednesday in Damaturu, the state capital.

According to Abdulkarim, the incident occurred at the Abbari ward following an argument between the couple. The suspect confessed during preliminary investigations that she did not intend to kill her husband but acted in self-defense. She alleged that her husband was beating and kicking her while she was still recovering from a recent medical operation after childbirth.

“The command is saddened by the unfortunate actions of a couple that led to the death of a promising young man due to the consequences of an abusive marriage,” Abdulkarim stated. “On June 26, 2024, the C Divisional Police Headquarters received a complaint from a neighbor about the couple. The argument, which began around 9:00 am, escalated into a physical altercation. Zainab Isa used a knife to stab her husband in the chest. He died from the injury before the police arrived.”

The case highlights the tragic consequences of domestic violence and the need for greater awareness and intervention in abusive relationships.
