The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command has confirmed a tragic auto accident resulting in the deaths of 25 travelers and injuries to 53 others. The incident occurred early in the morning at the Dangwaro International Market in Kano City.
The victims were reportedly traveling in a trailer that also carried cows, heading to the southern part of Nigeria from Maiduguri. The trailer collided with another vehicle and subsequently somersaulted.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the FRSC Sector Commander in Kano, confirmed the incident in a statement to newsmen on Monday. He stated that the accident involved an IVECO trailer with the registration number XA 311 ZB.
“We received a call at about 03:15 am on July 1, 2024. Upon receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the incident at 03:30 am,” Abdullahi said.
He attributed the accident to excessive speed, dangerous driving, and overloading, which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle.
During the rescue operation, several items were recovered, including six motorcycles, ten mobile phones, animals (goats and rams), maize, and a sum of N400,000. All recovered items are currently in police custody.
The victims were immediately taken to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital Kano for urgent medical attention, where doctors confirmed the deaths of 25 individuals.
Abdullahi warned motorists against the unsafe practice of transporting animals and goods alongside human passengers, emphasizing the dangers of overloading and reckless driving.
