A 30-year-old man, Olaniyi Sunday, was remanded in a correctional facility on Friday by an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping a minor.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, faces a single charge of rape.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, informed the court that the incident occurred between April and June in Araromi, Omuo-Ekiti. The defendant, a neighbor to the 12-year-old victim, allegedly caught her stealing meat from another neighbor’s pot. He threatened to expose her unless she agreed to his demands for sex. Despite her initial refusal, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

Adeniyi requested the court to remand the defendant while awaiting legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The defendant’s plea was not taken during the hearing.

Chief Magistrate Dolamu Babalogbon ordered Olaniyi Sunday’s remand in the correctional center until the legal advice is issued. The case was adjourned to August 7 for mention.
