Dr. Ugorji Okechukwu Ugorji, the former Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs in Imo State, has called on the Imo State Government to leverage the expertise of its diaspora by appointing Foreign Investment and Development Advocates (FIDAs). Speaking at a recent meeting of the Iheatu Political Action Committee in Owerri, Ugorji praised the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma for its recent efforts to attract investment in energy and agriculture but urged for more structured engagement with the Imo diaspora.
Ugorji’s appeal comes as part of a broader strategy to harness the potential of Imo State’s global network. He highlighted the work of the Imo Diaspora Leadership Forum, led by Engineer Sampson Ude, which first convened in Imo State on January 6, 2024. This forum, which Ugorji represented on behalf of Governor Uzodimma, focuses on fostering connections between Imo citizens abroad and their home state.
The former commissioner suggested that the state government could benefit from appointing FIDAs from among the resourceful Imo diaspora leaders. He proposed that these advocates could be instrumental in driving investment by offering incentives such as tax exemptions, waivers on building permits, and subsidized land purchases for projects deemed critical by the government.
Moreover, Ugorji proposed the creation of a Diaspora Village or Estate in Imo State, particularly in New Owerri. This initiative, he believes, would attract diaspora investors to develop both high-end and affordable housing, thus addressing local housing shortages and boosting the state’s internally generated revenue.
Ugorji emphasized the importance of integrating the diaspora’s financial and intellectual resources into Imo’s development plans. “The vision of engaging Imo diaspora leaders globally is commendable and timely. The state stands to gain significantly from their investments and expertise,” he stated.
This call to action aims to strengthen the economic ties between Imo State and its diaspora, potentially transforming the state’s development landscape and enhancing its appeal as an investment destination.
