The Nigerian Senate has appointed Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno as the new Chief Whip, replacing Senator Ali Ndume. This change was announced during Wednesday’s plenary session after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The letter, co-signed by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and National Secretary Senator Surajudeen Bashir, cited concerns over Ndume’s recent public statements. According to the letter, Ndume’s remarks were seen as damaging to the country’s stability. Specifically, he accused President Bola Tinubu of being surrounded by corrupt individuals and being oblivious to the widespread hunger in Nigeria.

“Ali Ndume, in his capacity as Chief Whip, has been making unguarded utterances that threaten to undermine the nation,” the letter stated.

Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio called for a voice vote to confirm Monguno’s appointment as the new Chief Whip, which was approved.

This change reflects the APC’s effort to maintain party discipline and address internal conflicts that could affect its governance.
