Nigerian Afrobeat megastar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has addressed the ongoing child custody dispute with Sophia Momodu, the mother of his first daughter, Imade. Davido emphasized that his primary request is for joint custody of their daughter.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the matter is currently being litigated in court.
In an Instagram story, Davido expressed his frustration with Sophia’s frequent references to the tragic death of his son in 2022, describing it as a painful reminder that haunts their lives every day.
He wrote, “You constantly bring up the death of my child at any opportunity to remind us of this tragedy that haunts us every day. Imade will grow up knowing I fought for her. As for now, you can have her. P.S. She won’t be a child forever. Enjoy Imade Aurora Adeleke! Your father loves you! All I ask for is JOINT CUSTODY!! And nothing else! But because it’s ‘Davido,’ y’all wanna act like y’all can’t read. Smh… I’m off this! Y’all be blessed and I pray this never happens to you.”
He clarified, “Joint custody means both parents will have access to the child. Sole custody means only a single parent will have access to the child.”
Meanwhile, Sophia Momodu has urged a Lagos State High Court sitting in Sabo, Yaba, not to grant Davido custody of their daughter. She argued that the musician is often unavailable and lacks the ability to provide the necessary care for Imade.
In her counter-affidavit, she refuted Davido’s claim of consistently fulfilling his financial obligations toward their daughter. She told the court that Imade was almost sent away from school because Davido allegedly refused to pay her tuition fees. Sophia also asserted that during their relationship, Davido never showed genuine commitment or love toward their daughter.
The court proceedings continue as both parties seek a resolution in the best interest of their child.
