The family of Mrs. Funmilola Popoola has accused an Ibadan hospital of administering expired medications, which they allege led to her death. The allegations were made during a live broadcast on Agidigbo 88.7 FM’s ‘Kokoro Alate’ program.

David Popoola, speaking on behalf of the family, recounted that his mother was admitted to the hospital on May 30, 2024, after falling seriously ill. Initially, she was taken to a private hospital where an oxygen supply was unavailable, leading to her referral to the Specialists Hospital in Idi Ape.

At the Idi Ape branch, the family was reportedly asked to pay a significant sum, including a N100,000 admission fee, additional charges for drugs, and an endocrinologist for her diabetes treatment. Treatment commenced promptly, but Popoola claims that expired drugs were used.

He revealed that one of the medications administered had expired in January 2024, while another had expired in April 2024. The family only discovered these issues when a relative noticed the expired date on a tablet and further investigation revealed that the injections were also outdated.

Despite raising concerns with the hospital staff, the situation worsened, and Mrs. Popoola became unconscious. She passed away on June 5, 2024. The family holds the hospital responsible for her death due to the alleged use of expired medications.

Efforts to obtain a response from the hospital were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. In response to the allegations, the Oyo State Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into the incident. Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, the state’s Commissioner for Health, expressed condolences to the Popoola family and assured the public that the investigation would be thorough. The ministry committed to providing updates as more information becomes available.

This case highlights growing concerns over medical practices and the need for stringent oversight to prevent the use of expired medications in healthcare facilities.
