The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a stark warning to the Federal Government of Nigeria, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu. According to a statement from IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful, Kanu’s health is rapidly deteriorating, and his continued detention could lead to severe consequences.
IPOB alleges that the government is intentionally provoking the group by ignoring court orders for Kanu’s release. “The global family of IPOB calls for the immediate release of our leader due to his worsening health condition. The Federal Government’s refusal to comply with local and international court orders for his unconditional release is a deliberate provocation,” the statement read.
The group emphasized that prominent figures, including religious leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the National Assembly, have all called for Kanu’s release. Yet, the government remains unyielding. “Despite widespread appeals from notable Nigerians, the government continues to ignore these calls for justice,” Powerful noted.
IPOB highlighted the perceived injustice in the treatment of Kanu compared to other regional activists. “President Tinubu’s administration has dropped similar charges against two Yoruba activists and a Fulani militia leader. However, it remains adamant about keeping an unarmed freedom activist like Mazi Nnamdi Kanu detained, even though there are existing court orders for his release,” the statement continued.
The group reiterated its commitment to non-violent advocacy for Biafra’s self-determination but warned that Kanu’s deteriorating health could lead to unpredictable consequences. “Kanu is gravely ill and must be allowed to seek medical treatment. The government’s continued detention of Kanu, despite his health issues, could lead to unforeseen and unimaginable outcomes,” IPOB cautioned.
IPOB called on President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly to avoid further escalation. “President Tinubu, release Nnamdi Kanu before it’s too late. The persecution of IPOB members has gone on for over a decade. Kanu has been held in solitary confinement for over three years without being found guilty by any court,” the statement added.
In a final plea, IPOB warned of potential repercussions if Kanu’s health continues to be neglected. “As John F. Kennedy said, ‘Those who make peaceful change impossible will make violent change inevitable.’ President Tinubu, take heed before it’s too late,” the group concluded.
