Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has defended spending N1.5 million on fuel for her convoy of six vehicles during an official trip to Anambra State. She addressed this issue on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday.
This appearance followed a heated exchange with members of the House of Representatives, who questioned the Ministry’s spending, including N45 million for a New Year party, N20 million for sanitary pads, and N1.5 million for petrol.
Kennedy-Ohanenye expressed surprise at the lawmakers’ scrutiny over the fuel expenses, insisting the amount wasn’t excessive. She explained, “We traveled with a bus for the staff, two security vehicles, one DSS and one police vehicle, my car, a backup vehicle, and another one. That’s six vehicles to Anambra State and back. What is N1.5 million for that?”
She added, “Everybody knows how much fuel costs these days. But when I was trying to explain, the lawmakers wouldn’t let me. They wanted a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ How can I do that without an explanation?”
