Nigerian actress Nancy Isime has responded with calm and resilience amid growing criticism over her new film, Blood Brothers. The poster, which depicts Isime in a niqab holding a gun, has sparked outrage among Muslim communities, leading the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) to call for a ban on the film.
Despite the backlash, Isime remains undeterred. In a series of cryptic Instagram posts, she addressed the controversy by emphasizing her commitment to personal peace and professional goals. “I’m really out of the way, in my own world, focused on goals and peace,” Isime wrote. She dismissed the criticism as a reflection of others’ insecurities, stating, “Your light often highlights other people’s insecurities, and they project it back as a flaw.”
Isime’s film, which has yet to be released, features a storyline that some have deemed provocative. The portrayal of a Muslim woman in a niqab involved in criminal activities has drawn accusations of Islamophobia from critics.
As calls for the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to intervene intensify, Isime’s response underscores her determination to stay focused and unaffected by external negativity.
