The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has scheduled its ward congress for September 27, ahead of the local government elections set for September 21.

The party has appointed Mike Ahumibe and Amby Umeh as chairman and secretary, respectively, to lead the Congress Planning Committee.

Senator Samuel Anyanwu, PDP’s National Secretary and 2023 governorship candidate, addressed party members, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and unity throughout the congress process. He urged all aspirants and stakeholders across the state’s 305 electoral wards to uphold decorum and avoid conflicts.

Anyanwu stressed that the congress should not be seen as a platform for demonstrating power or wealth but rather as an opportunity to strengthen party unity and advance its ideals. He praised the Caretaker Committee under Chidi Dike for their dedication and impartiality in managing the party’s affairs.

He also advised against any interference in the selection process, insisting that the grassroots should have the freedom to choose their representatives. “Imposing candidates on the wards would mean failing in our responsibilities as leaders,” Anyanwu stated.

The PDP National Secretary voiced confidence in the party’s ability to regain leadership positions both locally and nationally, criticizing the ruling APC for its alleged failures and mismanagement. He highlighted concerns about unaccounted palliatives and questioned the APC’s handling of state issues.

In his address, Anyanwu announced the party’s decision to include up to six women at the ward level, though he noted that if qualified women are unavailable, the party will consider the most effective men for the positions.
