Sergeant Cynthia Maurice of the Nigerian Air Force has etched her name in history as the first female professional golfer in the Nigerian military. Maurice’s groundbreaking achievement was recognized following a rigorous week of Professional Examinations held at HSD Golf Club Bayelsa from July 14 to July 20.
The examinations, overseen by the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (PGAN), included a series of challenging tests: playing ability assessments, written exams, and oral evaluations. Maurice’s successful completion of these tests marks a significant milestone for gender equality and diversity in both sports and the military.
Emmanuel Odoh, Assistant Resident Head Professional at TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, praised Maurice’s journey as a model of perseverance and dedication. “Cynthia’s ascent from a 36-handicap beginner to a professional golfer is nothing short of extraordinary. Her commitment and hard work have not only set a new standard but also opened doors for other female golfers in the military,” Odoh said.
Maurice, who took up golf just four years ago, drew inspiration from watching golf professionals and set her sights on turning professional herself. Her journey has been marked by intense dedication and sacrifice, as she committed herself fully to mastering the sport.
“This achievement is a testament to Cynthia’s unwavering resolve and her refusal to settle for anything less than excellence,” Odoh added. “Her success is a beacon of hope for aspiring female athletes and reflects the progress being made in promoting gender equality within the Nigerian military.”
