Tragedy struck in Zaria over the weekend as the body of a young man from Gombe State was discovered with deep cuts near the busy PZ area in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The young man, along with his friends, had traveled to Zaria with hopes of being recruited into the Nigerian Army.

The gruesome discovery has raised alarm, with initial reports suggesting that the victim was murdered by his companions who subsequently withdrew N800,000 from his bank account. The Public Relations Officer at the Army Depot confirmed awareness of the incident but deferred inquiries to the Zaria Divisional Police, who are handling the investigation.

A confidential source revealed to journalists that the young man was allegedly killed by his friends after they learned he had received a substantial amount of money from his parents. The source stated, “His lifeless body, bearing knife wounds, was found on Saturday morning in the PZ area. The deceased had recently received about N1 million from his parents. On Friday, he gave his ATM card and password to one of the friends to withdraw N10,000 for food.”

The friends, aware of the funds in his account and armed with his ATM details, are the prime suspects in the murder. The body has been deposited at a medical facility in Zaria.

The group of young men had stayed in Zaria despite failing to secure recruitment into the Army, wandering around since the recruitment process was moved from Falgore forest due to snake bites. They were reportedly chased away from the PZ area and had relocated to the polo ground, where they continued to cause disturbances to the local community.

The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to bring the perpetrators to justice. The tragic incident underscores the dangers of misplaced trust and the devastating consequences of greed and betrayal.
