Tragedy struck in Amassoma, a community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, on Monday, when some youths allegedly killed Francis Palowei, a final-year student of Niger Delta University (NDU), over a N150 levy at a popular local relaxation spot known as the sand dump.

According to a local resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the sand dump is a well-frequented area where students gather to relax and socialize. Recently, some local youths began charging students a fee to access the top of the sand dump, which has become a popular activity.

On Monday evening, Francis and his friends visited the sand dump. They were confronted by the youths, who demanded N500 instead of the usual N150. The situation escalated into an argument. The local youths called in reinforcements, including a notorious cultist, which led to a violent confrontation and the tragic death of Francis.
