The Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) has called on the Imo State Government and law enforcement agencies to intervene and stop a controversial event titled “That-Witch-Must-Die,” scheduled for August 30, 2024, in Mbieri. The event, organized by Mercy and Power Deliverance Ministry and led by Apostle Dr. Angel (Owomowomo Fire), has sparked fears of inciting witch hunts and violence against alleged witches in the state.
Dr. Leo Igwe, Director of AfAW, raised the alarm on Monday, warning that the event could lead to dangerous consequences, drawing parallels to previous incidents of witchcraft accusations that have resulted in attacks, torture, and even death. The advocacy group highlighted that billboards promoting the event have already been displayed across Imo State, including the capital city, Owerri.
AfAW stressed that while freedom of religion is a protected right, it should not be used to justify incitement to violence. The group urged the government and security agencies to act swiftly to prevent the event from taking place, thereby safeguarding the lives of those who might be targeted.
The group also reminded authorities that witchcraft accusations are a criminal offense under Nigerian law, and those found guilty can face imprisonment. AfAW has intervened in several cases of witchcraft accusations in Imo State, and the group fears that the upcoming event could lead to further tragedies.
