The family of former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd), has donated an ultramodern girls’ hostel to the University of Benin (UNIBEN), marking their second such contribution in just over a year. The new facility, inaugurated on Wednesday, is named after Daisy Danjuma, the matriarch of the Danjuma family, reflecting their commitment to the development and empowerment of the girl child.

Speaking at the inauguration, UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, praised the Danjuma family for their generosity and dedication to enhancing the university’s infrastructure. “We are here to celebrate someone who is just marvellous,” Prof. Salami remarked. “How can someone sit in her quiet corner and continue to give, if not someone whom God has created to impact humanity?”

Prof. Salami recounted the journey that led to the donation, recalling that the first hostel was inaugurated by Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki on April 29, 2023. During that event, Daisy Danjuma pledged to donate a second hostel, a promise that has now been fulfilled with the latest inauguration. Prof. Salami also mentioned Daisy’s commitment to donate a third hostel in celebration of her 72nd birthday, expressing hope that the family might consider a similar gesture for the male students.
