Heartland FC has announce the death of Coach Christian Power Obi, who tragically lost his life on Friday, August 23, 2024, following a road accident on the team’s way to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament.

The Heartland FC team, which departed Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, around 3:30 p.m., was filled with excitement for the tournament. However, shortly after 4:00 p.m., one of the vehicles collided with a carelessly parked truck while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

Despite the driver’s efforts, the impact left Coach Obi unconscious, suffering a slight injury to his right leg. He, along with other injured players, was rushed to a nearby hospital in Okwelle, Onuimo LGA, Imo State. Sadly, despite the medical team’s best efforts, Coach Obi passed away.

Coach Obi’s death has sent shockwaves through the Heartland FC community. His legacy includes leading the club to an unbeaten run in the 2022-23 Nigeria National League season and winning the NNL Super 8 in Asaba, Delta State. The club has requested privacy for both the team and Coach Obi’s family during this difficult time and will refrain from further statements for now.

Coach Obi’s remains have been deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) morgue in Owerri, while the injured have been transferred to the same hospital for further care.
