The Imo State University Legal Clinic Association took a significant step towards improving the lives of vulnerable inmates by visiting the Owerri Correctional Facility on August 20, 2024. Led by Staff Adviser Prof. Ngozi Umeh, the visit aimed to provide essential legal assistance to those who need it most, reflecting Nelson Mandela’s belief that a nation’s character is revealed in how it treats its lowest citizens.

Prof. Umeh emphasized that the association’s mission is deeply rooted in the pursuit of justice for the underserved. “Our goal is to bring real change to the lives of vulnerable inmates by ensuring they receive the legal support they deserve,” she stated. The visit symbolizes the beginning of a promising partnership between the Legal Clinic and the correctional facility, with aspirations for broader recognition and impact.

During the visit, the team engaged in a roundtable discussion with Deputy Comptroller Mr. C.E. Eke, focusing on the critical challenges inmates face. The discussion was centered on gathering crucial information that could expedite the release of those unjustly detained.
