Egbu community in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State is grappling with the aftermath of a large-scale demolition as the state government pushes forward with the expansion of the Owerri-Umuahia road. The project, which has seen shanties and businesses along the route torn down, is part of a federal initiative overseen by the Imo State government.

Imo State Commissioner for Works, Ralph Nwosu, stated that the expansion was necessary due to the narrowness of the existing road. “The state government is committed to completing the road construction in line with best engineering practices to ensure a wider and more functional road,” Nwosu explained.

The demolition, which began last week, targeted structures within the Right Of Way from Egbu to Emekuku communities. The expanded road will reportedly increase from its current width of 6 meters to 7.3 meters, providing a standard carriageway aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving the overall experience for road users.

Reactions from residents and business owners have been mixed. While some view the project as a necessary step toward development, others are struggling with the sudden loss of their livelihoods.

Mr. Frank Egere, a resident of Egbu, expressed support for the project, acknowledging that sacrifices must be made for progress. “It’s essential for the road to be expanded, and for that to happen, shanties obstructing the expansion had to go. It’s part of the sacrifice we have to make for development,” Egere said.

However, Ms. Esther, one of the affected business owners, voiced her distress over the demolition. “While I understand the need for the road expansion, destroying our businesses during this period of economic hardship is devastating. Many of us are left disorganized,” she lamented.

Despite the backlash, the Imo State government has assured the public that the road construction will adhere to best engineering practices and will be completed on schedule.
