Victor Osimhen’s potential move to Chelsea is facing significant hurdles as the club enforces a strict wage cap for new signings, reportedly set between £60,000 and £70,000 per week. This development, revealed by Sky Sports’ transfer chief Kaveh Solhekol, could derail the highly anticipated transfer of the Napoli striker.
Chelsea, under the leadership of Enzo Maresca, is actively searching for a top-tier striker, with Osimhen and Brentford’s Ivan Toney among the top targets. However, the club’s unwillingness to offer deals exceeding £70,000 per week has put the Osimhen deal in doubt, as the Nigerian forward is reportedly reluctant to take a substantial pay cut from his current earnings.
Solhekol highlighted the challenge, stating, “Chelsea’s current wage structure for new signings is tightly controlled, with base wages capped at around £60,000 to £70,000 per week, before bonuses. There’s a belief that Ivan Toney is more likely to agree to these terms, given his background at Brentford, where high wages are not the norm.”
This financial strategy marks a significant shift for Chelsea, a club known for its history of lucrative contracts, and it may well influence their ability to attract top talents in the current transfer market.
As negotiations continue, the likelihood of securing Osimhen seems increasingly uncertain, with Chelsea possibly turning their full attention to Toney, who appears more amenable to the club’s wage structure.
