Arsenal icon Ray Parlour has endorsed the club’s potential acquisition of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, praising the move as a strategic one for manager Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners are close to securing the Spain international, with Arteta focusing on midfield reinforcements after investing £42 million in defender Riccardo Calafiori. With Merino’s contract at Sociedad nearing its end, he represents a cost-effective option for Arsenal.

In his remarks to talkSPORT, Parlour pointed out that Merino might replace Thomas Partey in the starting lineup. “You look at Thomas Partey. He might be on his way, so they do need to strengthen the midfield and give Declan Rice more freedom to advance,” Parlour explained.

He added, “Merino is at a good age, 28, which is perfect for him to be in his prime. At £25 million, it’s a solid deal. Arsenal also have a good relationship with Real Sociedad, following Kieran Tierney’s move there.”

Parlour’s comments reflect a broader belief that Merino’s arrival could enhance Arsenal’s midfield dynamics, providing both depth and versatility.
