Seven family members in Egba, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, have been hospitalized after consuming pap, a traditional corn-based food. The group, including a widow named Amina Isah and her four children along with two grandchildren, fell ill shortly after eating the pap.
Reports indicate that the family began vomiting and lost consciousness after consuming the pap, which was made from corn mixed with chemicals intended for planting. They were rushed to Gana Clinic, a private medical facility in the area.
Dr. Oyaje Sule, the clinic’s proprietor, confirmed that three of the victims, including the widow, were brought in unconscious. The clinic staff managed to revive them, though their condition remains critical. Dr. Sule explained that the family had inadvertently used guinea corn mixed with planting chemicals to prepare the pap.
“The chemicals used for planting were mixed with the guinea corn, and after planting, the leftover was washed, ground, and used to make the pap,” Dr. Sule said. “This resulted in severe food poisoning.”
The victims, who range in age from three to 30, were initially in a critical state but are now receiving treatment. The incident highlights the dangers of improper handling and use of agricultural chemicals.
As of this report, the Benue State Police Command has not provided additional comments on the incident.
