A devastating incident has claimed the lives of six family members in Karkari village, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, after consuming a local delicacy. The victims, identified as 35-year-old Alhaqatu Abdulkarim and her five children, succumbed to severe abdominal complications over a span of four days.

According to Yakubu Danazumi, the Ward Head of Karkari village, the tragedy unfolded on Tuesday when the family began experiencing intense symptoms after their meal. Despite being rushed to Gwarzo General Hospital, the victims died in succession—two on the first day, two more on Wednesday, the mother on Thursday, and the last child on Friday.

Danazumi, speaking to Vanguard, confirmed the tragic loss. “We buried the victims according to Islamic rites and will observe the seven-day prayer for them on Tuesday. It’s a sorrowful time for our community.”

The deceased children, aged between four and 19 years, were identified as Usman Abdulkarim (9), Fiddausi Abdulkarim (11), Hafsa Abdulkarim (7), Jamilu Abdulkarim (4), and Bashari Abdulkarim (19). Their father passed away just seven months ago, leaving behind another wife with six children.

The community is in mourning as investigations are underway to determine the cause of the food poisoning. The tragic event underscores the need for heightened food safety awareness in local communities.
