Twelve people tragically lost their lives on Tuesday in a devastating road accident along the Malo Ogere stretch of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The incident, which occurred around 3:14 pm, involved a white Mazda bus with registration number DDA733XA that burst into flames after a failed overtaking maneuver.
According to Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, the crash involved 16 individuals, including 12 male adults, three female adults, and one female child. Out of these, four male passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Patmag Hospital in Ogere for treatment. Sadly, the other 12 occupants were burned to death as the bus became engulfed in flames following the accident.
The crash was attributed to wrongful overtaking by the bus driver, leading to a loss of control and collision with the road divider. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn, igniting the deadly fire that claimed the lives of the passengers.
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of reckless driving on Nigeria’s highways. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
