Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Imo State, Athan Achonu, has expressed disappointment over the recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld Governor Hope Uzodinma’s victory in the November 11, 2023 election. Speaking to journalists at his Umunumo residence in Ehime Mbano LGA, Achonu stated that the verdict did not reflect the true spirit of democracy.

The apex court, on August 23, affirmed Uzodinma’s election victory, dismissing Achonu’s challenge. While Achonu acknowledged the judiciary’s role in electoral processes, he raised concerns about the growing influence of judicial rulings over the will of the people, warning that such a trend could undermine democracy.

“I respect the judiciary as the final arbiter in our electoral system,” Achonu said. “But I must express my deep concerns, not out of bitterness, but out of a steadfast commitment to the principles of justice and fairness that our democracy should uphold.”

Achonu called for amendments to Nigeria’s electoral laws to ensure that the voices of the electorate are given precedence over legal technicalities. Despite his disappointment with the outcome, he promised that the Labour Party would remain committed to serving the people of Imo State, offering constructive criticism to the government where necessary.

“Though this judicial decision may be disheartening, we shall continue to strive for a just, fair, and truly democratic Nigeria,” Achonu assured his supporters.
