The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner in all 27 Local Government Areas and the 305 ward councilorship seats in the state. This announcement was made after the conclusion of the local government elections held on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

ISIEC Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, said the election was conducted in line with laid down procedures, with participation from 17 political parties. He emphasized the transparency and credibility of the process, noting that security agencies were fully involved to ensure a peaceful exercise. According to him, the APC emerged victorious in all the LGAs and wards.

In his statement, Ejiogu said, “The election followed the laid down guidelines and procedures. We gave room for robust participation. We had meetings with critical stakeholders and all security agencies. We observed primaries of political parties, and election took place across the 305 wards and 27 LGAs. Election took place at 4,758 polling units. Political parties inspected sensitive materials, and I can say that the election was peaceful, fair, transparent, and credible.”

However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the election as a charade and undemocratic. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, expressed disappointment, saying, “It is on record that ISIEC did not release the list of candidates for the election, nor did the commission publish the voter register at the polling units as the law requires.”

Obiaku further criticized the transparency of the electoral process, claiming that the commission failed to meet with political parties or other stakeholders before the election.

Despite the criticisms, the results have been declared, with the APC sweeping all seats in the local government elections.
