The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Imo State University (IMSU) has commenced a comprehensive, indefinite strike following years of unresolved issues surrounding unpaid allowances and salary disparities. The strike, which took effect on Friday, September 20, 2024, comes after multiple failed attempts at negotiation with university authorities and the state government.
In a statement signed by ASUU-IMSU Chairperson, Comrade Odinakachukwu Ejiogu, and Secretary, Comrade Lazarus Chikwendu, the union expressed its frustration over the continued neglect of staff welfare. “We are embarking on a total and comprehensive indefinite strike effective from Friday, 20th September,” the statement read. “This decision stems from several unresolved issues that have persisted for years.”
Among the issues listed are the non-payment of academic earned allowances dating back to 2009, salary disparities between IMSU staff and other tertiary institutions, delayed staff promotions, and the non-remittance of pension deductions since 2016. The union also condemned selective salary payments and the lack of financial benefits for promotions.
According to ASUU, all attempts to engage the university administration, governing council, and the visitor to the university through letters, rallies, and meetings have yielded no tangible results. “We issued a 21-day notice on July 18th this year, hoping that the university would resolve these issues. However, with no solution forthcoming, we are compelled to proceed with an indefinite strike to press home our demands,” the union said.
Despite the disruptions the strike may cause, ASUU called for public understanding and support as they continue their struggle for justice and improved conditions for the academic staff at IMSU.
