The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening a fresh strike if lingering issues dating as far back as 2009 are not resolved. This warning follows ASUU’s growing frustration over the government’s delay tactics and lack of commitment to implementing key agreements.
In a statement released on Wednesday, ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, emphasized the need for the government to honor the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s 2021 Draft Agreement. Among the demands is the immediate release of withheld salaries related to the 2022 strike action, which have yet to be addressed.
“The union has extended an additional 14 days to the government, starting from Monday, September 23, 2024, urging the resolution of all pending matters. The union warns that it should not be held responsible for any industrial action that follows,” Osodeke stated.
Other unresolved matters include funding for the revitalization of public universities, the release of unpaid salaries for sabbatical and part-time staff, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) in place of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). These unresolved issues continue to threaten the stability of Nigeria’s public university system.
