The Federal Government has rolled out a new initiative, requiring Nigerians to present their National Identification Number (NIN) to purchase 50kg bags of rice at a subsidized price of ₦40,000. This was announced at the official flag-off of the rice distribution program, which aims to alleviate the ongoing food crisis in the country.

Representing President Bola Tinubu at the ceremony, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, emphasized that the rice intervention will operate on a “one person, one bag” policy to ensure equal distribution among citizens. The initiative includes the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice nationwide.

Kyari explained that the initiative is part of the government’s effort to reduce the rising cost of food commodities and ensure access to affordable staples during challenging times. A government task force has been established to prevent fraudulent activities and ensure transparency throughout the distribution process.

To ensure proper verification, potential buyers must present their NIN, phone numbers, or IPPIS details (for civil servants) to access the subsidized rice. Buyers will be issued a code and treasury receipt upon successful registration, allowing them to collect their rice at designated collection centers.
