Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has lauded the remarkable performances of Nigerian athletes at the recently concluded 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, highlighting their perseverance, dedication, and embodiment of true sportsmanship. Speaking during a reception held at the State House, Abuja, Mrs. Tinubu expressed pride in the athletes’ achievements, particularly praising the gold medalists for their world-record-breaking feats.
Among the standout athletes were Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Onyinyechi Mark, who both won gold in para-powerlifting. Mrs. Tinubu specifically acknowledged Folashade’s extraordinary achievement of lifting 167kg, breaking her own world record and cementing her status as a two-time Paralympic champion. “You have set new standards for para-athletes worldwide,” she said, “and your victory shines as a beacon of hope for millions of Nigerians.”
In her capacity as the Grand Patron of Para-Sports in Africa, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the need for sustained support and investment in the nation’s athletes. She stressed that providing essential structures and resources would help para-athletes thrive and secure Nigeria’s position on the global stage. “We must ensure that the structures, resources, and opportunities for their continuous growth are not just available but enhanced,” she added.
The First Lady also took the opportunity to celebrate all the medalists, including silver and bronze winners. She expressed confidence that these accomplishments mark the beginning of even more historic victories for Nigerian sports. “Your success has united us all in celebration, and I am confident this is just the beginning of more historic accomplishments to come,” she stated.
Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, commended the First Lady for her unwavering support and noted that Nigeria has now won close to 100 medals since joining the Paralympics in 1960. The victorious athletes presented their medals to the First Lady, who reciprocated by gifting them with flowers and commemorative items, symbolizing the nation’s appreciation for their efforts.
