Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has expressed profound grief over the death of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, describing it as a significant blow to Imo State and a substantial loss to Nigeria.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Governor Adeleke highlighted Iwuanyanwu’s remarkable contributions to national unity and development. The statement, issued by Adeleke’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, lauded Iwuanyanwu as one of the few truly detribalized Nigerians who worked tirelessly for the unity and progress of the country.
The tribute read:
“Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu’s passing at 82 years is a heavy blow to his Imo State and a tremendous loss to Nigeria, a nation he cherished deeply. His love for Nigeria was evident in his investments in both human and capital resources across the country. In Lagos, for instance, his Champion Newspapers stood out as a significant competitor in the media industry.”
Governor Adeleke also noted Iwuanyanwu’s contributions to sports development through his sponsorship of Iwuanyanwu Nationale, a professional football club that represented Nigeria in continental championships during the 1990s.
“Iwuanyanwu’s role as President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and his efforts in bridging ethnic divides demonstrate his commitment to a united Nigeria. His ability to maintain an inclusive perspective, even under pressure, set him apart as a distinguished statesman,” Adeleke stated.
The Governor also acknowledged his personal respect for Iwuanyanwu, noting their shared heritage. “His political courage and dedication have earned him accolades, and his passing leaves a void in Nigerian politics,” Adeleke added.
He extended his condolences to Iwuanyanwu’s family, friends, and associates, recognizing the enduring legacy of a leader who worked assiduously for Nigeria’s socio-political development.
