Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has directed police officers from the Tactical Squad and Intelligence Unit who were deployed for the Edo State governorship election to remain in the state until further notice. This directive comes in response to growing tensions following the controversial election results held on September 21, 2024.
The election saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, secure victory with 291,667 votes, beating his closest rivals—Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 247,274 votes, and Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata, who garnered 22,763 votes. However, the election outcome has been widely rejected by opposition candidates and various election monitoring bodies, sparking concerns about security.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, Egbetokun emphasized that the continued presence of tactical units in Edo is aimed at maintaining security in the state during this critical period. He stated, “The Inspector-General of Police has directed tactical squads and intelligence contingents to remain in Edo State to fortify the existing security architecture until further notice. This proactive measure is essential to maintain public safety and stability.”
Egbetokun also confirmed that individuals arrested for electoral offences would be prosecuted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while those apprehended for criminal offences would face charges in court following investigations. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to upholding democracy and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, stressing the principles of fairness and accountability.
Additionally, the IG expressed condolences to the families of five policemen who tragically lost their lives in a car accident while returning from election duties in Edo State. The accident occurred in Karfi village, Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
