The Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to instruct relevant government agencies to install proper and identifiable street signage across the state. This resolution was made on Tuesday following a motion by Minority Leader, Mr. Ugochukwu Amuchie (Aboh Mbaise), during a plenary session in Owerri.
Amuchie pointed out that many streets in the state lack proper signage, making navigation difficult for residents and visitors. He emphasized that Imo, being a notable tourist destination, should have visible and recognizable street names to ensure smoother travel for visitors and improve the city’s image.
He further explained that the installation of proper signage would help regulate commercial activities, particularly for drivers, and restore orderliness across the capital. “Proper street naming is crucial for security and order, and it must be prioritized for the state’s growth,” Amuchie stated.
In support of the motion, Deputy Minority Leader Mr. Clinton Amadi (LP-Owerri Municipal) highlighted the importance of clear signage for people with impairments, ensuring they can navigate unfamiliar areas with ease. Mr. James Esile (Onuimo) added that street signs would not only beautify the city but also help control societal movement.
The Deputy Speaker, Mr. Amarachi Iwuanyanwu (Nwangele), pointed out that this initiative would also simplify the integration of locations into electronic maps for digital navigation. Speaker Chike Olemgbe (Ihitte Uboma) approved the motion and instructed the Clerk to forward the resolution to the governor and other relevant agencies.
