The 2024 August Meeting in Imo State concluded with a vibrant celebration of hope, resilience, and empowerment as thousands of women gathered at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri. Led by Barr. (Mrs.) Chioma Uzodimma, the First Lady of Imo State, the event was themed “Nwanyị Dị Ike” (A Strong Woman), highlighting the strength of women across the state. This finale marked the culmination of a month-long celebration dedicated to uplifting women and recognizing their vital role in society.
In her address, Mrs. Uzodimma announced the immediate empowerment of 1,575 women, ranging from rural farmers to small-scale traders, as part of a larger initiative to boost the socioeconomic standing of women across the state. The empowerment programs included financial assistance for small businesses, agricultural support, and resources for cooperatives, further enhancing the opportunities for women in both urban and rural areas.
Governor Hope Uzodimma, in his remarks, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting women, stressing the importance of gender-responsive policies that create pathways for female advancement. The governor emphasized that the challenges facing women today are temporary and promised continued efforts to ensure their long-term prosperity and inclusion in all sectors of society.
Mrs. Uzodimma’s speech drew inspiration from the historic Aba Women’s Riot of 1929, urging modern women to channel their inner strength and courage in overcoming obstacles. She reminded attendees that the legacies of their foremothers should inspire them to push for progress and create a better future for the next generation.
The event also featured a heartfelt appreciation from Mrs. Uzodimma to the federal government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for their ongoing support of women’s empowerment through initiatives such as the Renewed Hope Initiative. The collaboration between local and federal governments was highlighted as key to ensuring women’s voices are heard in decision-making processes.
