The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a man, Tahiru Hamidu, accused of repeatedly raping a mentally unstable married woman in the Owode community of Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. Hamidu, who allegedly exploited the victim’s mental condition, was arrested by officers from the Owode Egba Division on September 12, 2024, following a report by the victim’s brother-in-law.

According to Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state police command, Hamidu not only raped the woman multiple times but also threatened to kill her brother-in-law, Shofolahan, if he did not permit him to continue his heinous acts. The accused was said to have lured the victim into a cassava plantation, where he assaulted her repeatedly before releasing her.

The victim’s family reported the matter to the police after enduring continued threats from Hamidu, who allegedly sought to control the family by using fear and violence. Odutola confirmed that an investigation into the crime is ongoing, with the police working to ensure that justice is served.

This incident has drawn parallels to a similar case earlier in March 2024 when another man, Usman Bube, was arrested for attempting to rape a pregnant neighbor at the Ogatalo Fulani Camp in Imala. Bube had broken into his neighbor’s house while her husband was away, attempting to overpower her with a knife. However, neighbors intervened before he could carry out the assault.

Both cases have sparked renewed calls for stronger measures to protect vulnerable women in rural communities, where crimes against women often go unreported or under-prosecuted.
