President Bola Tinubu has defended Nigeria’s recent fuel price increase as a necessary step for the country’s reform process. Speaking to Nigerians in Beijing on September 6, 2024, during the final leg of his official visit to China, Tinubu emphasized that the hike is part of a broader strategy to overhaul Nigeria’s infrastructure and economic landscape.

Addressing members of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) at the China World Hotel, Tinubu stated that his administration is committed to bringing the same level of quality infrastructure seen in China to Nigeria. “We envision our children studying in well-equipped schools and benefiting from stable infrastructure, not in outdated facilities,” he said, stressing that bold decisions are required to achieve this vision.

The President described the fuel price adjustment as an “unprecedented step” essential for paving the way for Nigeria’s progress. He compared the country’s current challenges to the advanced infrastructure and stable utilities observed in China, stating, “We must make difficult choices if we are to leave a legacy of progress for future generations.”

Tinubu also urged Nigerians living abroad to represent their country with integrity and discipline. He praised China’s disciplined society as a model for Nigeria, highlighting the importance of national service and adherence to laws.
