In a bold move to tackle rising fuel costs, President Bola Tinubu has introduced Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel source for vehicles, pricing it at N230 per litre. This initiative, which offers a cleaner and cheaper option compared to petrol, currently priced at over N900 per litre, is part of the government’s strategy to ease the financial strain on Nigerians following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) aims to distribute one million free CNG conversion kits to commercial vehicles over the next 18 months. The first phase will see the immediate distribution of 10,000 kits to key national transport associations, including NURTW, Uber, and Moove, to facilitate the switch to CNG.

The conversion process, managed in partnership with NIPCO Gas, will roll out nationwide, providing the infrastructure necessary for a smooth transition. This initiative, according to Project Director Michael Oluwagbemi, underscores the government’s commitment to reducing fuel costs and supporting a sustainable, environmentally friendly energy shift.
